For elk country and long mountain shots, a 7mm Remington Magnum is a tool a lot of western hunters swear by. The Tikka T3x Lite Roughtech puts that cartridge in a rifle with a 24.3" barrel and a tan finish.

Few people in North Carolina hunt elk, but the 7mm Rem Mag has plenty of reach for open fields, power line cuts, and a trip out West. The longer barrel helps wring the most velocity out of a magnum case. It is also overkill for most whitetail, so decide honestly what you will hunt. North Carolina hunts range from thick Piedmont cover to long mountain shots, so match your cartridge to where you hunt.

The Lite name suggests a trimmer rifle that is easier to carry on a long climb, and the Roughtech name points to a tough finish built for rain and rough use.

Magnum cartridges kick harder than a .308, so plan to spend time at the bench before the season.
