Compact rifles suit smaller hunters and tight blinds. The Ruger American Compact is a bolt action in 6.5 Creedmoor with a 20 inch threaded barrel, a four-round magazine and a black finish.

A shorter length of pull fits young hunters, smaller adults and anyone who likes a handier rifle. The 6.5 Creedmoor offers flat trajectory and modest recoil, and it takes whitetail cleanly at normal woods and field distances. Combine those two, and you get a rifle that a youth can shoot well. Test your chosen ammunition before you trust it in the field or for carry, and stick with what runs well. A little practice every month beats a long session once a year.

Ruger's American line is known for good accuracy at a fair price. The Marksman adjustable trigger and a smooth bolt help new shooters group tightly.

A rifle like this makes a fine first deer gun for a son or daughter in the Piedmont or the mountains. It also works for adults who want something light. It ships to a North Carolina FFL dealer, where the background check is completed.
